I wish this wasn’t true, but we spend a lot of time looking at screens. Computer screens, phone screens, tv screens…there are glowing monitors all around us. It’s a problem. The church that I attend with Cam in his hometown, always projects the pastor on a projector screen over the actual pastor’s head during his sermon. I assume it is for the people in the back rows. But no matter where I sit, I find that I stare at the screen the entire time instead of the pastor’s real live face in front of me. WHAT. That’s absurd.

I sit in front of a screen about 8 hours a day at work. When I take my lunch break, I am likely scrolling on my phone. And when I get home, I am blogging on my laptop, watching tv, or…scrolling on my phone. There are a lot of things that we can do to limit that screen time and get away from our phones. I love this article from the New York Times. But I’m not sure if I would still have a job, if I told my boss that I was going to limit my computer screen time to 4 hours a day.

Eyeballing It

My eyes have begun to hurt. By 2:00 in the afternoon on a work day, I feel drained, more tired than I ought to be, and I don’t want to be near my computer any longer. It’s not a good feeling. There was one week in particular back in December that I couldn’t look at my phone any longer. I tucked it away in my purse during my train commute, when I would normally scroll around social media, and couldn’t think to even check my text messages. It was honestly freaking me out.

I had heard of computer glasses or blue light blocking glasses before, but hadn’t given them the time of day. But I became a little desperate. So I polled my Instagram followers 🙂 Wow, this is a way bigger issue than I had expected! You guys are into this. Those of you who have them are passionate about computer glasses and so many others wanted to hear more. So here I am trying them out. Thanks to you all, I received a lot of great advice:

  • They actually work!
  • They are great for:
    • Reducing migraines,
    • Eye strain,
    • Eye dryness,
    • Glare.
  • They help keep you alert and focused.
  • They are pretty affordable!
  • You can pay to add this type of film on your prescription glasses, too!

Eye Try

To my pleasant surprise, there are so many fashion forward and awesome frames to choose from. I decided to reach out to Pixel Eyewear and was gifted a pair to try out for all of you. At first glance, they look like normal prescription or fashionable fake glasses. No weird lens coloring or odd filter. I chose the Ventus, Crystal frames and they fit my face perfectly and do not give me a headache. Once you put them on, it doesn’t feel or look too much different. But as soon as you glance at a screen, everything feels softer and less harsh. My eyes feel peaceful and un-strained.

I tried the glasses out for a full week of work, 40 hours of sitting at my desk and extra hours of tv time and phone screen time, in order to give you an accurate review. My eyes feel rested and protected. Before wearing the glasses, I was so drained and uncomfortable by 2:00 in the afternoon. Now, there are no migraine sensations or dry feeling eyes. I really think they work so well and I highly recommend that you give them a shot if you work a desk/computer job.

I especially recommend them for anyone doing extremely detailed computer work, such as graphic design, web design, marketing, architecture, engineering, and interior design. Although I do a lot of administrative tasks as well, my eyes really felt poorly when I was doing very intensive graphic design on my computer. Another benefit of these computer glasses is an improvement in sleep quality. I don’t know if I could speak to whether or not that is working for me, but I HAVE been passing out prettttty quickly the last week, so maybe! If you are wondering, I am still consistently wearing them every day, even after my prescribed 1 week trial.
