Choose Joy

These past few months in our world have brought extremely unprecedented circumstances. The United States is looking into the eyes of a scary, unknown over the next, hopefully, 8 weeks and it’s hard to know how to respond, comfort, or prepare. My heart grieves for those who have lost loved ones, for entire countries who have been upended, celebrations that have been canceled and for the people who’s livelihoods are in jeopardy.

On top of these seemingly surreal circumstances, my family found out that our youngest sheepdog, 4-year old Honey Bear has lymphoma cancer; a very quick and inevitably fatal diagnosis. Although very small in comparison to this global pandemic, it has served as a very tangible grief right in front of us and it is heartbreaking. It doesn’t seem fair and I have been begging God to just take it away amidst lots and lots of tears. It seems like everyone I know is dealing with something extremely difficult on top of this global situation.

Our pastor, through Facebook Live this week, taught us from Philippians 4 about how exactly we are supposed to stay true to God and our faith, no matter the situation. As Christians, we are to choose joy and rejoice. We are to pray and overflow with thankfulness instead of worry. We are to be considerate, kind and compassionate to our neighbors; be the first to settle arguments. Set our minds on what is good and lovely and God-honoring. These are all difficult asks in the midst of absolute crap circumstances.

Alone, choosing joy seems impossible. Smiling and laughing seems like a chore; imagine trying to be “full of joy” like Paul in Philippians encourages us to be. I am attempting to lean into God as much as possible with every concern, worry, and sadness through prayer. He is still good. He is still faithful; even, and especially, when it doesn’t go my way.

Encouragement from God’s Word

Here are some verses to set your hearts on in the depth of this uncertainty, anxiety, and despair:

Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Matthew 6:34  Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you;my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Psalm 9:9-10 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Matthew 11:28-29 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

John 16:33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 40:31 But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Please pray for peace amidst this turmoil, for our healthcare providers and leadership to have strength and wisdom, and for our most susceptible population to feel calm and cared for. God’s got this. I am here for anyone needing encouragement or prayer.

xoxo,
