Christmas time is simply magical. The lights, the music, the celebrations, the love, the traditions all make me feel cozy and happy and light. The clock strikes midnight on December 1st and it feels like we are all off to the races! We shop, we plan parties, we watch concerts and movies, we sing carols, we eat food, we bake cookies, and then Christmas morning comes and it’s all over… Did we even stop to enjoy any of the beautiful glimmers of love and peace that were present this season? I don’t know about you, but with two weeks until Christmas I don’t want to pass those opportunities by.

I always thinks it’s funny that when I’m alone I have a hard time “doing” anything. It’s not that I’m lazy or need other people near me all the time, but I could seriously sit on the couch in complete silence for hours looking at my phone and eating one random thing I found in the refrigerator. But if someone told me “hey Jo, why don’t you pour yourself a glass of wine, turn on a Christmas album, make spaghetti, and sit by the Christmas tree?”, I would be like THANK YOU, I WILL! Allow this post to give you permission to indulge in one of these festive activities and treat yourself this Christmas, before it’s the 26th and it’s “all over”. (Don’t worry, if you need to watch Christmas movies all winter, that’s ok too!)

Merry Mindfulness

Mindfulness might seem like a fluffy weird concept to those of you who don’t truly understand it. I thought the same way, but as life gets crazier and crazier as I get older, the importance of mindfulness continues to become clearer to me. To me, mindfulness means fully attending to what is happening in the present; having our mind in tune with what is going on instead of “mindless”-ly going through the motions of your day. When you watch a Christmas movie, are you paying attention and singing along or staring at your phone and half laughing? When you are shopping for your loved ones, are you listening to the fun Christmas music in the background or tuning it out and becoming stressed? Let’s set aside time to do at least 5 things off this list before the 25th.

The Christmas Bucket List

  • Bake cookies with your mom, sister, or best friend.
  • Invite other friends over for cookies and milk (so you don’t eat them all yourself)
  • Deliver a tin of cookies to an unsuspecting neighbor
  • Sip on some hot chocolate and maybe add some red wine to it
  • Pile your family in the car with PJs on & Christmas cookies in hand and find all of the best lights in your town
  • Sit by the Christmas tree with a festive cocktail and your best friend and listen to fun tunes
  • Watch a Christmas movie, of course! And give a classic to a friend as a gift. My favorites include It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, The Holiday, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Home Alone!
  • Swing by Starbucks while you’re out shopping and order a Caramel Apple Spice with Whipped Cream or a Gingerbread Latte. Maybe even sit down there and enjoy it (woah, groundbreaking)
  • Make a Christmas playlist (or listen to mine below..BONUS!)
  • Sign up for a 5K in 2018 to avoid putting off exercise this winter. Exercise is my favorite way to reduce stress during the holidays, so don’t neglect your routine.
  • Send a hand-written letter to someone you know who might be having a hard time this Christmas
  • Read the true Christmas story about the birth of Jesus from Luke 2
  • Plan a cookie exchange for your co-workers
  • Cut paper snowflakes to hang in your windows
  • Decorate a gingerbread house and top it off with powdered sugar for snow
  • Round up a big group of friends or family to go ice skating or sledding
  • Burn a festive candle while you read in bed
  • Savor your morning cup of coffee in a Santa mug, under a cozy blanket
  • Make a Christmas craft like an ornament or a eucalyptus wreath
  • Hang a strand of Christmas lights in your bedroom to fall asleep by. Even better, buy a baby tree to put in your room.
  • Attend a candle-lit Christmas Eve service at your church. Or come to mine!
  • Read The Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve
  • Buy these crazy slippers and cozy robe to shuffle around in on Christmas morning
  • Spend as much time with your loved ones as possible, because that’s all that really matters this season!

My Christmas wish for you is that you would know the love that Christ has for you, the greatest gift that could ever be given. Slowwwww down so that you have the time to remember the reason we get to celebrate this time of year. You are loved and you are precious in His sight. Merry Christmas, everyone!

xoxo,

jojo
